Hi Habib,
Confusion is growing regarding the new EPA pump labeling requirements.
These labeling requirements are due to
mandatory changes to sulfur levels in diesel fuel.
Here’s What We Know
According to the EPA, changes in the sulfur
levels of diesel fuel created the need for four
new labels. All petroleum marketers, fleets and other wholesale
purchaser-consumers of on-road and off-road diesel will need to switch out
their old labels depending on which fuels they handle.
What Labels Are Needed
The four labels that must be affixed to diesel
pumps as noted in sections 80.572 (a-d) and 80.573 (a) of the Code of
Federal Regulations are for labeling pumps dispensing:
- Ultra-Low Sulfur Highway Diesel Fuel (15
ppm)
- Ultra-Low Sulfur Non-Highway Diesel Fuel
(15 ppm)
- Low-Sulfur Non-Highway Diesel Fuel (500
ppm)
- Low-Sulfur Locomotive and Marine Diesel
Fuel (500 ppm)
What is the Deadline For Labeling?
The proper labeling language must be displayed
by October 1, 2010. However, if you turn your tanks over prior to October 1,
then you can begin labeling prior to October 1.
NOTE:
In the case of the ULSD Highway Diesel Fuel
pump label, you can begin labeling by June 1, 2010 since this label contains
changes to references to vehicle year only and not sulfur level changes.
Where Can I Purchase These New Labels?
For your convenience, OPIS has arranged for
you to secure these decals for as little as $1.29 per pump decal depending
on quantity ordered. The easy-to-read, black and white decals are 4”x 6”
each, with letters that are 24-point bold (the minimum size that EPA
requires) that will keep you in compliance and out of trouble.

P.S. There is no need to wait to replace
the on-road ULSD label. ExxonMobil has already replaced its on-road ULSD
decals at direct-supplied stations and has informed their distributors that
they will also need to replace the labels. Avoid the rush and order your
ULSD on-road decals today.
